The X-Fly: The X-Alps for the mere mortal
You’d love to compete in the X-Alps, but you’re no Alex Hofer? The X-Fly Mont Blanc might just be what you’re looking for. Drawing inspiration from this prestigious event, a group of French pilots headed by Bertrand Doligez have created a more accessible competition with an interesting scoring format.
Everyone starts together at Gresse en Vercors in the Haute Alpes in France on July 14 with the well-known site of Plaine Joux, near Chamonix, as the ultimate target seven days later.
Each day there is a defined task and the goal for the day is the next bivouac, which is the same location for everyone. Pilots who don’t make it by air or on foot are picked up by a shuttle service and driven to the bivouac.
Failing to complete the task decreases your score and passing certain turnpoints can earn you extra points, and gives an added incentive to fly rather than walk.
One other novelty is that the event is also open to students under the supervision of an instructor, beginners, and disabled pilots, providing everyone with a challenge in a secure and friendly environment.
