World Record falls with a 507 km flight on a paraglider!
Nevil Hulett has broken the world paragliding distance record in the de Aar area of South Africa with a 507 km flight from Copperton on his Mac Magus 6.
James Braid’s report on the XC Open World series website, www.xc-open.org, reads that Nevil “flew from Copperton (about 60km SW of Prieska) to somewhere near the Lesotho border (inside Lesotho by the sounds of things).
The conditions were really strong, high clouds, strong winds, strong thermals, just the stuff one needs. Unfortunately, only a handful of pilots in the world can handle that kind of flying.”
Congratulations Nevil!

While Brazil and Australia (Manila) are very very nice places for a xc, only South Africa has the ‘peculiar’ weather setup for a ‘very fast’ and fairly smooth xc. On certain days of the year, the subtropical system meets the antarctic air flow (called by the locals ‘sea breeze’) . This results in a easterly moving air mass over 100′s and 100′s of km ! Even relativ inexperienced pilots fly tens of km at DeAar. On a good day one will winch up in fairly calm ground winds, get one of the smooth thermals up to the high cloud base after which a fairly smooth ‘dead glide’ follows and presto – 50km mark. I study weather systems for a unrelated matter and for what paraglider pilots want, South Africa is unique just as the US is with tornados. For a similar feat in Brazil or Australia, the pilot will have to fly for 12hours+. Nevel has another more subtle record. Covering 100km strait distance in 1hour 30minutes. And at DeAar is only a question of time before we see the first 100km in 1hour !
