Leonardo Andrade wins Iquique Open 2009
Chile’s famous desert paragliding competition, the Iquique Open, took place on the Halloween weekend this year, 28 – 31 October.
Leonardo Andrade (CL, Niviuk Icepeak) won, beating Eitel Von Muhlenbrock (CL, Macpara Magus 6) by 200 points. In 18th place overall, making her top woman was Ana Maria Bustos (CL, UP Trango 3).
This was the 20th Iquique Open, and was an FAI cat 2 event. The field of 36 competitors was made up of mostly Chileans, but there were representatives from Finland, Poland, the UK, Austria, Switzerland, Colombia, the US and Peru. The four tasks included flying in a desert mountain range, and racing between turnpoints over the city to land on a Pacific beach amongst palm trees.
