Across Himalaya expedition

Friday 26 March, 2010

Across Himalaya bannerAs the Himalayan Odyssey team celebrate their half-way point at Mahendranagar, another team of pilots is making a separate crossing of the Himalaya: The Across Himalaya expedition started the second leg of their 5-leg (one-a-year) mission yesterday, 24 March 2010.

Across Himalaya’s mission is for teams of pilots to fly across the 2,400 km Himalayan mountain range. A team of seven paraglider pilots from four countries began in India and crossed into Nepal in 2009, which was the first leg. It took them ten days. From here the journey continues into Bhutan and will finish in India at Arunachal Pradesh.

The 2010 team comprises 11 pilots, including three women, of varying nationalities. They are: Dimitris Bourzanis (GR), Adie Kumar (IN), Kari Castle (US), Sebastien Bochet (FR), Anders Baerheim (NO), Regula Strasser (CH), Suzanne Wyss (CH), Go Kato (JP), David Sachl (CZ), Paul Guschlbauer (AT) and David Alemanni (IT).

The team are allowing a timeframe of 20 to 25 days. They started on 24 March from the Jot Pass near Dalhousie.

Pilots will be flying and bivouacing, walking where necessary. As with the Himalayan Odyssey team, seven of the pilots are using SPOT tracking systems, so you can follow their progress live on their website. A few hours ago most of the pilots were at Prashe Lake, just north east of Mandi in the Himachal Pradesh region, roughly 80 km from their start point.
