Biotech Bordairline paragliding adventure races
The Biotech Bordairline adventure races are paraglider hike-and-fly races in which competitors must travel as far as they can, and get back to the start point, in 33 hours, either on foot or by paraglider. At least 20% of the distance should be flown – penalty points are incurred if this is not adhered to. A 20% bonus is awarded for making it home in the time allowed.
There are three classes: solo, tandem and female, and a total of 65 gliders allowed.
Registration starts at 6pm on the Friday before the event. Pilots must carry the appropriate equipment at all times, and have a functioning GPS and mobile phone.
Nova team pilot Paul Guschlbauer won overall in 2009, coming first in both the German and Swiss rounds, and coming fourth in Austria (Jacob Hermann was first),
You can sign up for the event on their website. The dates are as follows:
Switzerland – Locarno, 22 – 23 May
Germany – Hochries (Crossalps), 3 – 4 July
Austria – St Martin im Lungau, 13 – 14 August
Italy – Basano del Grappa, 25 – 26 September
