If you’d like to take part in this year’s Nordic Open, which will be held in Portugal from 25 – 30 June, you need to hurry and register. There are places for 125 pilots, and 108 names on the list at the time of writing. 90 of the places are reserved for Nordic pilots until 16 March.
The popular FAI cat. 2 paragliding competition is to be based in the summer ski resort of Manteigas in Portugal’s Serra da Estrela, near the Spanish border where tasks mix mountain and flatland flying. The open distance record for the site stands at 223 km and it has hosted two PWCs, so you can expect some good cross country flying.
The cost for the week is €165, but there is a poll on the competition’s website, inviting prospective competitors to vote on whether they would be prepared to pay an extra €20 to have official live tracking at the event.
The Nordic Open 2011 is organised by Mads Syndergaard, Cross Country magazine blogger. He knows a thing or two about paragliding competitions having been competing in them for 17 years. He’s even written a book on the subject, ‘Flying rags for Glory: an A to Z of Competition Paragliding‘. Mads is aware that paragliding competitions are also pilots’ holidays and should be well-run and fun. Perhaps that is why the Nordic Open is always such a popular event.
