Cross Country magazine’s South Africa correspondent Jaco Wolmarans has reported fantastic flying conditions in Porterville over the last few weeks. Local pilot Anthony Allen broke the Western Cape distance record on 7 January, which had previously stood for 15 years.
In the days leading up to the 173 km record flight, local instructor and guide Barry Pedersen on a Swing Astral 6, and Anthony Allen on a Gradient Avax XC2, flew increasingly long flights from Porterville, with the day’s bests being 135 km (Barry, 26 December – a personal best), 141 km (Anthony, 5 Jan), 148 km (Barry, 6/1).
