On Sunday 21 August, 20-odd pilots had a beautiful evening soar – at 5,000m over the summit of Mont Blanc. Five of them, including Gin’s Eric Roussel, top-landed.
This period of August seems to be the magic time for Mont Blanc landings, with the previous known occasions that it has happened, being 13 August 2003 and 19 August 2009.
The high cloudbases were enjoyed elsewhere in the Alps too. The following day, a 4,700m cloudbase in Switzerland allowed pilots to overfly the Weisshorn, and Nova team pilot pilot Urs Haari (CH) reached nearly 4,500m on a 212km flight from Fiesch, aboard an EN B Mentor 2.
