The 29th ‘Icares du Cinema’ flying film festival takes place at St Hilaire du Touvet this September 22-25, during the much anticipated Coupe Icare festival.
The list of films that are entered in the competition has been announced, and is available on the Coupe Icare website.
The prestigious film festival attracts an audience of 20,000 people, and celebrates all things flying with films covering BASE jumping, paragliding, kiting and hot air ballooning amongst others.
There are plenty of paragliding films in the listings, including the much anticipated Red Bull X-Alps 2011, available to preorder at XCShop.
There are also two films by two different acro pilots, documenting the quest to learn to perform what is arguably acro’s most dangerous manoeuvre – infinity tumbling. Judith Zweifel’s film, Mount Infinity, is about her mental and technical preparation, ups and downs, difficulties and successes on her way to the peak of ‘Mount Infinity’.
US pilot Nova Dasalla suffered apalling injuries on his road to achieving the same manoeuvre, after a crash in September 2009 left him with a broken back, compound fractures of both legs and a broken shoulder. It took a lot of pyhsiotherapy and positive mental attitude to learn to walk again, but in June 2010 he achieved his dream of infinity tumbling. Infinite Stumbling is his story.
Films are shown to the public in the Festival marquee on the South Launch on Thursday and Friday evenings from 19:30 to 23:30, the official selection process to determine the finalists being made by jury on the Thursday evening, and the shortlisted films being shown on the Friday.
The Gala kicks off at 18:30 on Saturday with the prizegiving and projection of the winning films.
There is lots more information on the film festival and the rest of the Coupe Icare on their website.
Cross Country magazine will be on stand B21, and look forward to meeting people there and sharing what is always a fitting finale to the northern hemisphere’s main flying season.
