Carl Wallbank broke the British flexwing open distance record on Sunday 15 April 2012 when he flew his Moyes RS hang glider from Llangollen in Wales to Portland on England’s south coast, a straight-line distance of 266km.
In doing so he broke a record that had been held by Nick Pain for twelve years.
Carl almost broke Neville Almond’s overall UK open distance hang glider record, which stands at 269km and was flown on a Class 5 Atos last May.
After his flight Carl said he could have kicked himself, as he could have easily flown another 3km along the beach!
He also narrowly missed his own 10km goal cylinder by a few metres, so preventing him from also claiming a distance-to-goal record, but nothing can take away from his fantastic flight, or the relaxed nature with which he appeared to have flown it, judging from the way he calmly chats to the camera while thermalling to ‘base on his video.
Congratulations Carl, and well done to Bob Little for the longest retrieve in the UK!
