Video: Paragliding in Iceland

Monday 30 April, 2012

Iceland is a unique country with breathtaking landscapes carved out by the immense natural forces at work. Most famous for Bjork, the blue lagoon and the quirkiness of its capital Reykjavik, Iceland is now promoting itself as an adventure playground. Flying Effect have created this video of paragliding in the Highlands. Just be warned – you’ll find yourself looking for plane tickets after watching it.

Editor Anita Hafdis Bjornsdottir told us:

“After travelling and paragliding in several other countries, we felt it was time to experience an Icelandic adventure. We wanted to do a hike n fly in the Highlands, I was gonna do the hiking and flying and Asa the retrieving with some local flying with me.

“We got some sponsors for clothes, food, maps etc. and also used the opportunity to be a part of the UN Women Iceland branch project going at the time called Við viljum veita konum byr undir báða vængi which translates directly into something like, we want to be the wind beneath women’s wings. Then we never really had the weather (or the guts) to do bivouac in unchartered territory.

“A few week later we returned to the region and did some more filming. I’ve now edited this together in this video which I hope will  inspire people to explore nature and of course inspire women and novice pilots to have their own adventures, sort-of ‘you don’t have to do the X-Alps to be an adventurer’.”

Anita along with a group of Icelandic pilots have also created the websitewww.paragliding.is. The site is full of information on flying in this unique country. Anita said, “We offer guidance and assistance and any help a visiting pilot might possibly need, and in the near future we might organise tours.”
