Sometimes, the edge is too close. In 2011 Dalibor Carbol and Juraj Kleja pioneered a 300km vol-bivouac through the Karakoram to K2 base camp.
A year later they returned to the Greater Ranges, this time to the Tien Shan. Their destination was Khan Tengri, ‘The most beautiful mountain in the world’.
After two days flying they landed 30km up a giant glacier with no hope of retrieval. ‘We thought we’d never make it back,’ writes Dali.
This spectacular example of adventure flying is what happens when you put two of the most ambitious Greater Ranges pilots in a new and remote location.
“Every trip like this changes us. We know that we are opening doors for others through our bivouac flights in high mountains. The question is how far will it go and when will it end?”
