“Too many paraglider pilots turn their noses up at comps!” says Mike Haley, a speak-your-mind Texan who doesn’t suffer fools gladly. “But competitions are about the best cross country clinic you could ever do. It’s great education, it’s great fun.”

Mike is the organiser behind the Rat Race, the biggest competition and mentoring clinic in the USA.

In issue 148 of Cross Country Andy Pag talks to him about the competition scene in the USA and why he wants as many pilots as possible to get involved.

It’s not about head-banging or pulley-to-pulley racing, he says. “You can learn more in a week of competition than you can in a season of XC. There’s a lot of learning that goes on.”
