‘Is it a B or a C’: The Gin Carrera, EN B

Hugh Miller reviews the new GIN Carrera in Cross Country issue 153 (May / June 2014) – and goes weak at the knees.

Is she an EN B or an EN C? Is it late nights and shots all the way, or Ikea catalogues and cups of Earl Grey tea?

Hugh writes:

Let’s tackle the whole, “Is it a B or is it a C?” thing straight away. It’s a C. I asked Gin Soek Song categorically about this, and he told me, “It’s a replacement for our EN C Tribe and it’s meant to compete strongly with the best current C wings.”

He added: “We were already very satisfied with the general flying characteristics before testing the EN manoeuvres. So when we realised the Carrera could pass at EN B it seemed a shame to go back and re-design it only for the purpose of writing ‘EN C’ on the label. We also felt that it was time that more pilots recognise that the EN category is only a very general guideline.”

So there you go. Of course there are the conspiracy theorists who would have you believe Gin knew exactly what he was doing and snuck the wing in right at the top of the Bs, or tell you that Gin are sticking two fingers up at the EN system with this wing – but let’s just stick with the facts: the Carrera is for ‘C’ type pilots. Housework done.

The full review is in issue 153.
