Nicole Schmidt claims first FAI Infinite Tumble record – update

Tuesday 20 May, 2014

Nicole Schmidt has claimed a new world record for Number of infinite tumbles (footlaunch) in both women’s and general categories.

She flew 60 rotations on 14 May 2014 from Babadag above Oludeniz in Turkey.

The record is the first acro world record to be set since the FAI recognised and set up a raft of new acro world record categories earlier this year.

Despite the ‘world record’ claim the number of infinite tumbles executed by a pilot is in fact far higher than 60.

Horacio Llorens completed 568 tumbles after exiting from a helicopter above Guatemala in December 2012.

And Felix Rodriguez executed 264 above Chamonix in August 2012 for an unofficial foot launch record. He had successfully top landed Mont Blanc and flew the infinite tumbles on the way back down to the valley.

And 18-year-old David Tejero from Malaga, Spain has flown 202 infinite tumbles with a paramotor.

However, the Schmidt record is a milestone in establishing ‘official’ world records with the FAI in what is the relatively young discipline of acro paragliding. The FAI is the Fédération Internationale Aéronautique and is the international body of airsports, sanctioning competitions and approving world records.

Nicole’s record claim reads:

================================================

UPDATE 22 May 2014: Nicole’s claim for these records was cancelled by the FAI on 21 May 2014. The reason given was that Nicole did not have a valid sporting licence.
