Paragliding in Algeria

Tuesday 16 June, 2015

The first ever free flight festival took place in Algeria in May 2015. It was organised by the local school, Gillesfly, who are working towards getting free flying recognised by Algeria’s national sports federation.

The festival was attended by just 20 local pilots and three foreigners, but whereas paragliding is popular in neighbouring Morocco, the sport is still in its infancy in Algeria, and the country’s flying potential is still untapped.

Paragliding Earth shows just three flying sites in the country, but the local pilots fly many more. There are six mountains over 2,000m; the tallest is Tahat (2,908m) in the Hoggar range. The Djuradjura range stretches across the upper part of Algeria for 75km, offering a huge potential for paragliding.
