Speedflying the Jungfraujoch with DanA
Max Mittmann flies the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau in one spectacular flight
To fly over the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is one of the most impressive flying experiences in the Alps. But it’s not often possible to take off from the 3,500m high Jungfraujoch – the weather and wind have to be perfect. When it works though, the flight about these three giant mountains definitely fits in the ‘Once in a lifetime’ category for sure!
It’s hard to think of another mountain that has so fuelled the fantasies of the alpinist in the last hundred years as the Eiger (Ogre): the attempts to conquer its north face are now the stuff of mountain legend.
But the Eiger is only one component of the most fascinating mountain formation of the Alps, which also includes the Mönch (Monk) and the Jungfrau (Virgin). Just think of the terri-fying bedtime stories an ogre, monk and innocent maiden could and did suggest not so very long ago.
These three mountains tower powerfully above the valley which descends to the twin towns that make up Interlaken. If you look up from here these co-lossal 4,000m peaks, so close and so high, so dominating and snowcovered the whole year round, they never cease to astound the unsuspecting lowland dweller. It’s little surprise that the Jungfrau with its Aletsch Glacier was made a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2001.
This is just where we hoped to fly.
