Nova have released their waterproof compression bag in a larger size, to fit wings up to size M.
The fully waterproof and lightweight (140g) bag is popular with vol-bivouac pilots, to protect their wing (or sleeping bag) from dirt, sweat and water. It’s more effective than a waterproof rucksack cover, Nova say, when hiking in the rain.
The bag is made from a lightweight silicone-coated Polyamide weave with taped seams, and has a vent to push air out for easier packing.
Nova say the M/L bag will fit all lightweight models in their range, and the Ion 4 and Mentor 4 M up to size M or the Prion 3 up to size S. They add, “Larger wings require very thorough packing to make it fit”.
The smaller 35-litre S/M bag that has been available for some months weighs 120g. It’s ideal for all Ibex and Susi Q wings, the Mentor 3 and 4 Light and Ion 3 up to size XS.
Nova stress that wings should not be stored in the compression bag as they would suffer from extremely tight packing over an extended time.
How to use the Nova compression bag:
- Fold the glider in a way that the two halves of the wing make narrow strips, which are placed on top of each other.
- Then fold the glider, rather than rolling it up.
- Open the vent on the compression bag and place the folded glider inside the bag.
- Place the compression bag on the floor and push the air out of the main opening using your knees.
- Close the main opening by rolling it up several times.
- Use your knees to push any remaining air out of the compression bag through the vent. The wing can block the vent, so just push it back using your index finger.
- It isn’t necessary to push out every last bit of air. Please proceed with caution! The compression bag should be primarily used for protection from sweat and harmful environmental effects, rather than to press out all the air.
- Ready to walk!
