Paragliding Karakoram’s Gasherbrum I+II and Broad Peak

Wednesday 30 April, 2008

1985:

Antoine Girard begins his Himalayan adventure on June 14th 2008.

He aims to climb three 8,000 m peaks around the Baltoro glacier in the Pakistan Himalaya, without sherpas or oxygen, and fly off them on his Airwave Himalaya adventure wing. The peaks he intends to summit, neighbours of K2, are Broad Peak (8,047 m), Gasherbrum2 (8,035 m) and Gasherbrum1 (8,068m). His will be the first known descents by paraglider of Broad Peak and Gasherbrum1.

Tipping the scales at under 2 kg, yet with a sail area of over 20 m2, a trim speed of around 40 km/h and a glide ratio of over 7:1 Airwave say their Himalaya wing was designed for just such adventures, claiming it has a very efficient brake deflection to aid launches in the difficult conditions of thin, high altitude air.
