The Canungra Classic, northern Australia’s premier hang gliding and paragliding competition kicks off this weekend.
The week-long competition (3 Oct – 10 Oct) promises great flying through the “picturesque hinterland of south east Queensland”. The unique flying terrain sees pilots launch from take-offs within sight of Australia’s famous Gold Coast before flying through mountains and out into the flatlands.
As well as being a serious competition for Australian pilots on the national ladder, the week also sees a ‘Best of the Rest’ class.
Canungra is known for year-round flying from its several sites, which include Mount Tamborine and Beechmont. Australian hang gliding star Jonny Durand learnt to fly in the area as a teenager and has won the hangy title eight times in a row.
