German pilot Markus Schapler has filed a claim for a 202.71 km tandem out-and-return flight in Kenya’s Kerio valley on 15 January, aboard a Skywalk Join’t2.
He and passenger Markus Wesselmann were in the air for seven-and-a-half hours.
Skywalk have a team of pilots including Burkhard Martens in the African Rift valley at the moment with Poison3s and Join’t2 paragliders, chasing records. It would seem that they are seeing some success.
If the two Markus’ claim is ratified, they will have beaten UK pilot Toby Colombé’s 2008 tandem record by 35 km.
The flight has also been submitted for ratification for records in the ‘Speed over an out-and-return distance of 200 km’ (33.75 km/hr) and ‘Free out-and-return distance’ (208.34 k) categories.
The tracklog and other flight information can be viewed on Xcontest.
On the same day, Thomas Schweers provisionally broke the world ‘speed over an out-and-return flight of 100 km’ record, for a flight averaging 38.54 km/hr. This came three days after he had broken the equivalent tandem record, also on a Join’t2, for a 100 km out-and-return flight averaging 29. 5 km/hr.
